01Field definition

The animal becomes the sensing platform.

Biologging begins where direct observation ends: underwater, at night, across migration corridors and inside the moving body.

Working definition

A biologger is a miniature electronic instrument carried by an animal to record or relay its movement, behaviour, physiology, or surrounding environment.

A logger stores measurements for later retrieval; telemetry sends them by radio, cellular, acoustic, or satellite links. Modern systems frequently do both.

2026 thesis

The field is moving from tracking points to connected inference systems: multimodal sensing, onboard intelligence, global relay and shared data standards.

02Technology signals

Five shifts that changed the 2026 field.

Ranked by novelty, evidence strength and likely field impact—not by market share or hype.

01

Space-based wildlife IoT

Deployed

ICARUS 2.0 put Raven, its first dedicated microsatellite, into orbit on 3 May. The planned constellation is designed for up to six animal-tag updates per day.

T1
2026 proof point1 dedicated satellite · 5+ planned
Boundary

The launch validates infrastructure—not yet full ecological performance, access, or tag lifetime.

02

Self-powered biochemical tags

Strong prototype

A solar + motion-powered microneedle ear tag continuously monitored pH, K⁺ and Ca²⁺ and inferred five metabolic states in minipigs.

T2
2026 proof point14 days · 95.26% · 3 animals
Boundary

A controlled three-animal study is not evidence of production or wildlife readiness.

03

Edge AI on the animal

Field-demonstrated

Compact models now classify behaviour on low-power tag hardware, enabling alerts instead of continuous raw-data transmission.

T3T4C2
2026 proof point33 cattle · 4-month field trial
Boundary

Bounded livestock tasks do not establish transfer to unknown wildlife behaviours.

04

Animal-point-of-view sensor fusion

Research-ready

Camera, depth and acceleration packages reveal the behavioural meaning behind ambiguous movement traces in animals humans cannot follow.

T5
2026 proof point13 sharks · 68.5 h of footage
Boundary

Video is power- and data-heavy, short-duration and usually recovery-dependent.

05

Shared data + reporting layers

Scaling

Live feeds, controlled sharing, common vocabularies and welfare metadata are turning isolated deployments into reusable infrastructure.

P2C1C3
2026 proof point20.7B Movebank measurements
Boundary

Infrastructure cannot repair poor design, missing metadata or structural geographic gaps.

03Active infrastructure

The field is becoming a network of networks.

The strategic work is no longer only a better tag. It is coverage, shared receivers, governed data and a pathway into decisions.

Current focus

Cross-border marine arrays, multisensor bird tracking, livestock traceability and sovereign satellite coverage.

2026 evidence

The 2026 JRC review says GNSS/IoT ear tags are mature for livestock identification, while STRAITS and HABITRACK connect tracks to policy.

Next move

Interoperability with government systems, common standards, cost control and GDPR-compliant uptake.

Company checkVerified / qualified

No dedicated Gothenburg-headquartered biologger manufacturer was verified in this 2026 evidence scan.

Lerum Energi and Partille Energi are Greater Gothenburg deployment partners. TiVA of Kalmar supplies the fixed AI fish-camera system at Hedefors; it is adjacent monitoring, not an animal-borne logger.

SE2SE7
Local opening

Use Säveån and the west-coast eelgrass projects as an aquatic living lab that links physiology, PIT histories, fixed AI observation and habitat restoration.

06Friction map

The animal is not a neutral mounting surface.

Every gain in resolution, duration or connectivity carries a burden in power, interpretation, welfare, maintenance or governance.

01

Instrument effect

A tag can alter the physiology, behaviour, survival or demography it is meant to measure.

ResponseReport mass, dimensions, shape, attachment, duration and outcomes—not only percent body mass.
C1
02

Power × payload

Video, high-rate GNSS and uplink compete with weight, lifespan and welfare.

ResponseDuty cycling, energy harvesting and event-triggered sensing help, but must be validated by habitat.
T1T2T5
03

Unknown behaviour

Closed-set models can confidently force an unseen action into the nearest known class.

ResponseUse open-set recognition, confidence reporting and independent animals/sites.
C2T3
04

Fragmented data

Billions of records still vary in units, vocabulary, quality flags and deployment metadata.

ResponseAdopt persistent vocabularies, event/deployment models and durable repositories.
P2C3
05

Recovery + durability

Cameras need recovery, acoustic arrays need maintenance, and marine attachments foul or detach.

ResponseDesign redundancy, release mechanisms and explicit data-loss expectations into the study.
T5P3P5
06

Equity + governance

Hardware, connectivity, analysis and authorship remain concentrated; tracks can expose sensitive animals and places.

ResponseFund local ownership and maintenance, and use controlled access for sensitive locations.

0712-month horizon

Watch the handoffs, not the headlines.

The next year will be defined by whether 2026 prototypes and projects become reliable services, standards and decisions.

This is a decision-oriented evidence scan, not a systematic review or complete commercial landscape. “Top five” ranks the strongest 2026 research signals by novelty, evidence quality and likely field impact.

Fixed cameras, drones, eDNA and isotope reconstruction are labelled adjacent unless they are explicitly paired with animal-borne tags. Commercial claims are excluded from the ranking unless supported by institutional or peer-reviewed evidence.

The full narrative report and machine-readable source register live in data/research/ for the next review round.
